A Brief History of The Pittsburg Avenue of Flags

The first meeting of The Pittsburg Avenue of Flags was held on March 14, 1972. Founding officers were Chairman Elwood Bath, Vice Chairman W.V. Stroud, Treasurer Estela Bird, and Publicity Chairman Larry Monahan.  The Pittsburg Avenue of Flags was organized as a non-profit organization whose sole purpose is to fly the flags for deceased military veterans on Memorial day.

The first year one hundred forty-seven flags were flown. Today over eight hundred seventy are flown.

Volunteers help put out the flags and take them down at night.  The flags and poles from this beautiful display are stored in a nearly one hundred year old building on the cemetery grounds.

The Committee today consists of members from the American Legion Post 64, American Legion Post 64 Auxiliary, American Legion Post 394, Sons of American Legion Post 64, Veterans of Foreign War 1158, Daughters of the American Veterans and the general public.

While the building has served The Pittsburg Avenue of Flags well, it is quite frankly worn out with bowing side walls and a leaky roof.  A new home is sorely needed to replace the old building.

The Pittsburg Avenue of Flags is arguably one of the most impressive patriotic displays in the area on Memorial Day. Your support to raise funds for a new storage building to hold the flags and poles would be appreciated so we can continue this awesome display.

If you are willing to donate to thic cause, please make checks payable to Pittsburg Avenue of Flags. Donations can be mailed or dropped off at KTCCU (5th & Broadway in Pittsburg) or the Mytown Media offices (5th & Locust in Pittsburg).
